User Experience

This service allows building owners to see an easy-to-understand, high-level assessment of the potential cost-energy benefits of retrofitting their buildings. Normally, this would require thousands of dollars in consultancy fees and take weeks, but CITYlayers does this for free at the click of a mouse. Once this service is selected, clicking on any building in the map will, within just a few seconds, create an on-screen report showing the savings potential across heating, cooling, emissions, and energy demand from 3 different retrofit scenarios, all compared to the status quo. This uses archetype assumptions for every building in Montreal, calibrated against real data from Hydroquebec, with results good enough for building owners to have the confidence to take their next step.

The retrofit scenarios are as follows:

  • R0 Status quo (no retrofit)

  • R1 Windows, walls, and roof are brought in line with current legislation

  • R2 Energy-efficient HVAC plus rooftop PV

  • R3 Deep retrofit (R1 + R2)

Single-building retrofit - Cost-Benefit Analysis Report

The report contains easy-to-follow graphs and charts showing direct comparisons between all scenarios and a ‘user recommendation’ for the next steps. The report can also be downloaded as a PDF onto the user’s computer.
